The Problem

When one thinks of a canteen during school lunch breaks, the image of a chaotic kiosk with surrounded by hungry children placing their orders, providing cash and asking for change. Moreover, school canteens mostly offer quick bites which some children may be allergic to. Understanding this challenge, Castle IT solutions decided to transform the traditional canteen system into a cashless, monitored canteen.

Requirement:

If you have ever been to a school canteen during their recess time, then the first thing that you will notice are the long queues. Over that, some children don’t carry exact change. In the six-hour school day, students are given hardly 20 minutes of recess time. To feed almost 2000 students in a time period of 20 minutes is in itself a challenge.

Secondly, obesity is a growing concern particularly for school going children in this region. Considering there was no formal way of monitoring their food habits, children would eat what they feel like, thereby risking their health.

The Solution: VirtuWares

After many brainstorming sessions, Keita, a caterer in school canteens, approached us to provide a solution. Our team devised a game changer technology - the cashless canteen.

Cashless payment

Each student in the school Keita serves is provided with a card which can be recharged online when required. This way parents can ensure their children’s account never goes dry.

Allergy free food

The parents were also able to enter any food allergies their children might have into the system and when a Keita staff would scan their card, they could avoid giving children what they’re allergic too.

Monitoring meals

Since all payments were done through the card, parents were now able to monitor what their children were eating and in how much quantity. This way, they could keep a tab on their children’s food habits, ensuring they eat healthy and live healthy.

Results

Along with the parents, the highest beneficiary are the school canteens. As it is a compulsory service to run for almost all schools, schools strive hard to run them as cost-efficiently as possible. But sometimes there is a big loss of resources due to absentees. With a cashless system, the parents can preorder or cancel accordingly, which in a way helps the kitchen staff make more informed decisions with better analytics and stock management, thus cutting cost and reducing waste.
